Legendary style icon, Karl Lagerfeld passed away today; Tuesday, February 19, 2019 in Paris at the age of 85. House of Chanel Paris, confirmed to CBS earlier today. Cause of death has not been released as of yet, but local media sources disclosed that there have been concerns regarding Lagerfeld’s health since fashion week January 2019, when the creative director did not appear at the end of the Chanel fashion show and other sources reveal that Lagerfeld had miss 2 of the Chanel haute couture shows in January. Chanel only disclosed Lagerfeld was feeling tired, stating “Mr. Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, Director of the creative studio of the house, to represent him.”
Timeline of Karl Lagerfeld’s professional achievements and contributions to the fashion industry.
Chanel announced today that Virginie Viard is Lagerfeld’s successor. Viard is seen in many media photos working closely together with Lagerfeld at events. According to close sources of the French fashion house, it has been disclosed that viand is a longtime friend and close colleague of Lagerfeld, somewhat of a “right hand man”. Lagerfeld also mentions his relationship to viand in a documentary called “7 days out” on Netflix, stating “Virginie is the most important person, not only for me but also for the atelier, for everything. She is my right arm and even if I don’t see her, we are on the phone all the time.”
Viard has worked with Lagerfeld for over 30 years and started as an intern at Chanel in 1987. The Fashion house of Chanel revealed in their announcement earlier today that “so that the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld can live on.”
It is clear that Chanel is confident in Virginie Viard to fulfill Lagerfeld’s line of succession for the French fashion house. It seems to me that Viard is the most appropriate choice for the new creative designer of Chanel, and was most likely groomed to become Lagerfeld’s successor and inherit his role and responsibility. I am confident that Chanel has made a good business decision and that Viard is not only capable, but
inspired to continue the legacy that Karl Lagerfeld has build for the fashion industry.
I express my deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of this visionary, whose iconic contributions shaped the fashion industry of the largest house of fashion. Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy will continue to inspire us ,through the designs and creativity, has has left to the multi billion dollar industry which was greatly impacted by this man.
Will continue to update.
