The Nutcracker Winter 2019
Winter is my favorite time of year, as it is for most people. This year we saw The Nutcracker at the Segerstrum Center of the Arts. Growing up my dad introduced to me his love for theatre, broadway, ballet and opera. My dad enjoyed the theatre so much he always had season tickets which was equivalent to 1 show every month or so. For me on the other hand, when I was still a little critter. For a young girl, it cannot be expected to enjoy and have a true appreciation for theatre. In fact I only attended the shows, looking forward to dinner and maybe shopping as bribery to come with him, as I sat through what I thought to be boring at the time.
Throughout the years, I have developed a true appreciation for theatre, musicals especially. I started to enjoy musicals first. I was excited every time my dad told me the show would be a musical. My favorites, to name a few are Mamma Mia, Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked. The list goes on Jersey Boys, Lion King, Hairspray, Annie, etc.
I now face the challenge with my four year old daughter, Sophia. This was the first time she had seen a ballet or any theatre show besides the ones at Disneyland. I will say, maybe a ballet isn’t as intriguing to a four year old as musicals are, but her complete lack of attention during the show surprised me. Thus leading me to write this blog post. Although, I started out with the same attention span and mentality as Sophia, I thank my parents for introducing me to the Arts as a child. It was educational and gave me experiences and childhood memories that I am now incorporating into my own family. I will continue to bring Sophia to shows and hopefully she will learn to enjoy them as much as I have. If not, she will have cultural experiences to gain.
